A native of Rochester, NY, Eric Metzgar freelances regularly around the United States and Canada. Eric is an in-demand drummer and versatile collaborator who offers his musicianship to jazz entertainer Jon Seiger, contradance band Tempest, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2005, he has had the opportunity to perform in the Rockport, Lewiston, Iowa City, and Rochester jazz festivals. In June 2014, Eric served as the house drummer for the International Trombone Festival at the Eastman School of Music.
Eric is a passionate educator deeply invested in music teaching and learning. Each summer, he teaches at the Rockport Jazz Camp under the direction of saxophonist Alexa Tarantino. He maintains a private studio and is writing a book to develop comprehensive musicianship for drummers.
Eric is currently translating arias from Irish composer William Vincent Wallace’s opera Maritana into a suite of original compositions for varied instrumentation; he is collaborating with Richard Metzgar on this visual art and music project in Waterford, Ireland. The two artists will present their work at the Arts in Society Conference this summer in Paris, France. Eric holds a BM in Jazz Studies and an MM in Music Teaching and Learning from the Eastman School of Music.
